  • Accomplishments: Crossed the English Channel and landed on Omaha Beach on the Normandy Shore. In the early hours of June 6th, he was already on an LCT getting ready to leave England and sail across the Channel, when he was taken off to make room for a reporter from the "Stars & Stripes" that wanted to go in on the first wave. All the men aboard that vessel were killed before they hit the beach. Ray crossed the Channel later that same day, and although many in his group were killed or wounded. After surviving the battle on D-Day, his battalion built bridges and other wooden structures in the European Theatre of Operations.
  • Medals: Received citations for outstanding performance of duty in action from both the United States and French Presidents. He received the Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation, and his name is inscriibed on the Wall of Liberty as one of the courageous Americans whose sacrifice and commitment led to the liberation of the continent of Europe during WWII. He was awarded 4 Bronce Stars, A Distinguished Unit Badge and Good Conduct Medal. The American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, 3 Overseas Service Bars & the Victory Ribbon. He passed away in September of 2000.
